How do I get a replacement key?

I've been a complete dunce and managed to lose the only key for the backdoor of my girlfriend's house. Very drunk at the time, so no idea where it is. Can a locksmith come along and make a replacement, or are they going to tut a lot and say they need a new lock? It's a very old lock with a thick (chubb?) style key. Thanks!How do I get a replacement key?assuming that the locksmith could replace the key, he would first have to take the lock set apart, take the lock cylinder apart, and then have to measure the pins and then try and cut the key. including call out charge and labour it's going to be v. expensive. even then it might not be possible.

since you've said it's an old lock it's probably best to get a replacement- it will be more secure as well.

so, for the new lock either:

(1) install it yourself

(2) get a professional/ friend (good at diy) to install it.

if (1) heres a start: http://www.wikihow.com/Change-a-Lock

if you need a professional, phone around, get some quotes, and they can probably provide a suitable lock too. you can take the old lock apart urself assuming some1 still has a front door key ;)

sorry, but a new lock is the sensible answer.How do I get a replacement key?I think you will have to get a new lock and key. Otherwise, anybody could say they lost their key and get a new one for any house they wanted. I know where your coming from though, I think when we get drunk, things get up and move so we cant find them when we are sober:)How do I get a replacement key?A good locksmith will not need to take the cylinder apart or anything of the sort..he will come out..slip a blank key int the hole..pull it out do a couple cuts and filings..slip it back in..pull it back out adjust his cuts and done.... I have had tio have what is called %26quot;keys cut%26quot; for 2 different vehicles..and 1 house key....They usually get it properly cut like this on site within 3 to 4 stabs..cost is about 75.00 here maybe more in major citiesHow do I get a replacement key?You could remove the cylinder yourself and take it to a locksmith. Look on the edge of the door where the bolt lock pops in and out. You should see 1 or 2 screws in the plate. Loosen those screws and then the key cylinder will wind out from the outside of the door. Take it to a locksmith and he can make a key and then you simply screw the cylinder back in the door and tighten the screws back up.How do I get a replacement key?it may be cheaper to replace the lock, unless you no a locksmith,who won't charge you an arm and a leg.How do I get a replacement key?A new lock will definitely be cheaper than calling a locksmith.
