I've been a complete dunce and managed to lose the only key for the backdoor of my girlfriend's house. Very drunk at the time, so no idea where it is. Can a locksmith come along and make a replacement, or are they going to tut a lot and say they need a new lock? It's a very old lock with a thick (chubb?) style key. since you've said it's an old lock it's probably best to get a replacement- it will be more secure as well.
so, for the new lock either:
(1) install it yourself
(2) get a professional/ friend (good at diy) to install it.

if you need a professional, phone around, get some quotes, and they can probably provide a suitable lock too. you can take the old lock apart urself assuming some1 still has a front door key ;)

Look on the edge of the door where the bolt lock pops in and out. You should see 1 or 2 screws in the plate. Loosen those screws and then the key cylinder will wind out from the outside of the door.
