How long is the recovery time when having a total shoulder replacement?

My father is 65 years old and injured his shoulder. The orthopedic surgeon tells him that he has torn some of his bicep and that he needs to have a total shoulder replacement done, because of his problems with arthritis on top of the injury. He is unsure if it is really worth going through the pain and recovery, plus he's concerned that he might not gain any mobility from the surgery anyway. Anyone have any advice on their own experiences? How long is the recovery time when having a total shoulder replacement?First of all, have him get a second opinion. Surgery is not always the best option...I have a superspinatus tear in my left bicep muscle that I have chosen not to surgically repair and I have rheumatoid and osteo arthritis. I chose not to repair it because the pain of recovery is worse than the pain not having the surgery. but you asked the recovery time after this type of surgery, that would depend on your father's attitude, but it ranges from 8 to 12 weeks. How much pain is he in now? Would it be worth it, if surgery relieves his pain? Let him ask himself these questions before making this decision. Good LuckHow long is the recovery time when having a total shoulder replacement? Not trying to be a jerk, but if you have a supraspinatus tear it is in your supraspinatus muscle and not your bicep. Promise I am not trying to be mean, just letting you know. How long is the recovery time when having a total shoulder replacement?I think that a second opinion is warranted in this instance. The recovery time for a TSR is approximately 3-4 months as he will have to have extensive therapy once the surgery has been completed. If your dad is active and healthy this may be his best alternative but definitely get a 2nd opinion. Good luck!!!!!How long is the recovery time when having a total shoulder replacement?i had to have my whole shoulder redone due to a car accident.

it is worth the pain of the surgery due to the fact that you can loose total use of the arm.

i had it all replaced and i have arthritis. the idea is to keep up with the physical theraphy no matter what. mine happened 20 years ago and i still do some to make sure that i dont stiffen up too bad.

tell your dad good luck and that it is worth it. if he doesnt have a lot of faith in his doctor, get a second opinion. go to the bone specialist for his injury.

the physical theraphy is really rough. i always left the office in tears because it hurt so bad. when i had the surgery, they told me that i would probably have 40% usage. i ended up with 90%. i credit that to a good surgeon and a fantastic physical theraphist that wouldnt let me quit.
